Arenas of Artificial General Intelligence Hype

AGI Hype Arenas is a data visualisation scrollytelling project developed within the Master’s in Data Design at Elisava – Barcelona School of Design and Engineering. This interactive project critically engages with the hype surrounding Artificial General Intelligence through the analytical framework of AGI Deep Hype. Building on Andreu Belsunces’ ongoing research, it examines how AGI promises are articulated in relation to cyberlibertarian politics, tracing the narratives through which future technological transformations are rendered plausible and desirable.

To understand how AGI hype is produced and sustained, the project analyses language patterns across a range of sources, including interviews, blog posts by tech CEOs, media articles, marketing materials, and academic publications. These sources were curated through a selection of articles using Ground News, a platform that enables the comparison of media coverage across different political orientations.

The collected material was then examined through qualitative coding in MAXQDA, organising statements into six key dimensions: conceptual (definitions of AGI), temporal (predictions regarding its deployment), attentional (statements designed to capture attention), existential (references to risk and long term impact), economic (financial implications), and political (questions of governance).
