Libération, the newspaper co-founded by Jean-Paul Sartre, is now talking about Hype Studies! Yesterday, they published Nicolas Celink’s interview with Jascha Bareis and Andreu Belsunces Gonçalves, who introduce some ideas for critically examining the attention dynamics of a debate dominated by Big Tech sensationalism.

This matters to us because, beyond understanding the sociotechnical, political, epistemic, communicative and labour implications of hype, we also aim to raise awareness of how hype shapes our decisions and creates the illusion of inevitable technological change. We see the ability to recognise and question these dynamics as crucial to reflecting on, protecting, improving and expanding democratic life and institutions.
